Puberty kind of sneaks up on you. Maybe it starts with the hair, or you begin to feel like maybe you need a bra. While everyone goes through it, the signs of puberty you experience may be different or happen earlier and later than people you know. Puberty is a stage of development in your body from kid to adult.
Lots of girls and guys worry about when their bodies will develop. Guys wonder when their voices will get deeper, when they'll need to shave, or when their penises will grow. Girls want to know when their breasts will develop or when they'll get their first period. If a friend or a younger brother or sister develops first, they may worry that there's something wrong with them. The fact is that physical development starts at different times and progresses at different rates in different people.
It started happening to my year-old daughter this spring. The pants I hemmed up in June were too short by October, despite only being washed once. As a loving mom and adolescent medicine specialist, these are heady times for me.
