Creating nudes and sharing them seems to be part of human nature. A collection of poems, stories and memoir on the subject, it takes a long hard look at the contemporary — and seemingly timeless — habit of sharing images of the naked human form. The idea came to editor Julianne Ingles after a short story entitled Send Nudes was submitted for a previous anthology she was working on. What did Edgar Degas want? More than a hundred young naked women crowd the walls in paintings, drawings, prints, and pastels. Twenty others hold tortuous poses in bronze. The cumulative effect is both steamy and cold, like the clinging efflux of a sickroom humidifier. I suppose he was a voyeur: addicted to views, usually from behind, of women in oblivious, intimate actions, such as bathing, drying themselves, or combing their hair.

Paintings of naked women, usually by clothed men, are suddenly sitting very uncomfortably on gallery walls. Male artists wonder whether they can work with the female form, while the world questions what their intentions were in the first place. By Michael Slenske. And the question of the moment has become: Is it still an artistically justifiable pursuit for a man to paint a naked woman? To answer this question, I reached out to a number of prominent male artists known for doing just that as well as for painting nude men.
Often, those scenes are sexualized. Frequently, the bare body parts belong to women. Overwhelmingly, audiences accept flashes of breast or bottom without much protest. Female nudity on-screen is commonplace, at times even banal.
