I actually was able to go to my first trainshow in over a year!!! One of my finds was an Athearn Hustler shell for a buck. We all know the challenges of that drive system and I need a better solution. What I want are some powerful and reliable slow speed critters that can be used for in plant switching. I don't care if the little Tyco Plymouth or the Athearn Hustler don't have agreed upon prototypes.

Click here to see what you are missing! Just curious - does anyone still make the replacement gears for the Athearn Hustler? I don't recall it ever having any gears to replace. Rubber bands were used. I think Earnest or someone made a kit to replace the rubber band drive with gears for the RDC and maybe the Hustler. Posted from iPhone. The NWSL kit was pricey, as one would expect.

I decided a couple weeks ago that my next project would be to repower and redetail an old Athearn Hustler diesel. So, let's get started! The new mechanism is now finished! It now runs quietly and smoothly, has plenty of torque, and has a great speed range. I don't have the detail parts yet, so that part will come later.
