As published on 29th July, shop
2013, the tourist arrival targets for 2013 have been lowered by Sri Lanka's tourism sector. This was done because the number of arrivals so far (till June 2013) was far less than what was expected. The original estimate of arrivals was 1.25 million, and now it has been lowered to 1.1 million, as said by SLDTA Director General, Mr. D.S. Jayaweera at the inaugural of The Hotel Show 2013. There were a total of 512,281 tourists in the country in the forst six months, which is an increase by 13.1% from last year.

Although the earnings from tourism in 2012 were $1 billion, and this is expected to increase to $ 1.5 billion in 2013, the decrease in the tourist arrivals will mean that this is the first time when the tourism sector may fail to meet the expectations.

The Investment Promotion Minister, Mr. Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena has blamed the high rates for hotel rooms, which are around $600, as the main drawback of the tourism sector of SriLanka. He said that the rates need to be diminished to attract more tourists into the island country.

According to Mr. Jayaweera, tourist arrivals have significantly increased in the last four years. In 2012, the country recorded around a million tourists, but more 500,000 tourists have come in the first six months of 2013 alone. He also expressed that 75% of the tourists visiting Sri Lanka from January to June were here for the beaches. In the past 5 years, foreign tourism has shown an increase of 20%, against the 30% growth in domestic tourism.

Interestingly, Chinese tourist arrivals have increased by 72%, while the Russian crowd has grown by 45%, as compared over the same period last year. For meeting the market demands in these regard, the Sri Lankan tourism sector must improve their standards, especially in the fooding department. It may mean the preparation of authentic dishes targeted at the relevant crowds. And this would mean training and specializing atleast 20,000 chefs in this field. According to Jayaweera, Sri Lanka must follow the steps of Singapore and invite more tourists through their taste-buds. An approximate of 20% tourists visit Singapore just for their numerous cuisines and delicacies. Currently, in the formal sector, 16,500 rooms are recorded, out of the total inventory of 25,000. A minimum target of 35,000 to 40,000 rooms must be achieved in the next two years. Their rates, in accordance, must be brought down as an additional measure.

According to the plan for the period 2011-2016, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Strategy planned to spend heavily on water parks, marinas, golf courses, light aircraft services and sea planes, gaming cities, race courses, parks, malls, adventure sports, boat hiring and taxi services. Transport solutions were proposed to be the main factor of luring tourists, and using sea planes were seen as the ideal solution for people who spend more. The SLTDA planned to upgrade the railway tracks and building them closer to the main tourist spots.

SLDTA must now plan and work effectively to achieve any significant success in the tourism sector in the near future. They, must segment the market to identify the right category of tourists, improve the communication for marketing, and also promote tourism by offering attractive offers.
